Inheritance of the Enslaved: George Pointer, the Syphax Family and Slavery on the George Washington Memorial Parkway

Inheritance of the Enslaved: George Pointer, the Syphax Family and Slavery on the George Washington Memorial Parkway

The George Washington Memorial Parkway links several places in northern Virginia important to the life of George Washington. Washington and his family enslaved hundreds of people at these sites. In spite of suffering devastating abuses, those enslaved on the George Washington Memorial Parkway led important and meaningful lives. Join ranger Daniel Blier and distinguished historians and authors Cassandra Good, Barbara Torrey and Clara Green for a moderated seminar and Q&A session about the lives and descendants of prominent people once enslaved at Great Falls and Arlington Plantation.

Cassandra A Good is an Associate Professor of History at Marymount University. She is the author of First Family: George Washington’s Heirs and the Making of America (forthcoming, 2023).

Barbara Boyle Torrey is the former executive director of the Division of the Behavioral and Social Sciences at the National Academy of Sciences. Clara Myrick Green is a historian and author of two articles on George Pointer. They are the coauthors of Between Freedom and Equality: The History of an African American Family in Washington, DC (2021).
