Virtual lecture: Zen Buddhism and Japanese Art

Virtual lecture: Zen Buddhism and Japanese Art

Professor Laura McCloskey from George Mason University will provide an artistic journey through the central concepts of Zen Buddhism as evidenced in Japanese Art. Beginning in the Middle Ages and culminating in the present day, the lecture will explore how Japanese Buddhist monks and skilled artisans have transformed the Japanese artistic ethos to incorporate simplicity and a visual appreciation for the ephemeral. Concepts to be addressed include the life and teachings of Daruma, tea ceremonies, Zen gardens, renga poetry, and zenga painting styles. Adults.
