U.S. and Virginia Education Politics, Policies, and Prose: The Debate over the Teaching of History

U.S. and Virginia Education Politics, Policies, and Prose: The Debate over the Teaching of History

History and social studies standards are revised in Virginia every seven years. The latest revision process began in 2019 under Governor Ralph Northam’s administration. The history standards went through an extensive review and were set to be released near the beginning of the 2022- 2023 academic year. There has been a delay as Governor Youngkin’s administration has raised concerns. Atif Qarni will look at the trajectory of the development of the revised history standards, why there is a debate over these standards and how politics have influenced the process.
