Author Roger Di Silvestro: Return of the Bison: A Wildlife History of Extinction and Conservation
In a special partnership with Bards Alley, author Roger Di Silvestro will discuss his new book, Return of the Bison.
(Publisher's description) "The story of how one of the most iconic symbols of the American West was almost lost to history and of the continuing journey to bring them back is brought to life in Return of the Bison. Author and naturalist Roger Di Silvestro explores the complex history of the bison’s decimation and how a rising awareness of their possible extinction formed the roots of modern wildlife conservation tactics. The issues surrounding the efforts to increase the bison population are connected with other conservation trends such as wildlife corridors, prairie restoration, and the ongoing question of whether bison must be fenced like cattle or can roam like the wild animals they are. Weaving in natural history and American historical context, Di Silvestro explores the key role of America’s Indigenous people, whose fate has been intertwined with the bison’s, as well as famed conservation personalities such as Teddy Roosevelt and George Bird Grinnell. In a time when many natural wonders and species have been lost, Return of the Bison imparts a story of hope that reverberates through the conservation community as an exceptional example of restoration."
