Lorton Prisons

Meet Author Alice Reagan

Alice Reagan will discuss the 91-year history of the Lorton Prisons Complex in Fairfax County. She will include slides from the recently published Lorton Prisons (2023). She will focus on questions like Why was the original Occoquan Workhouse located in Fairfax County? Why was it seen as an experiment in carceral methods? Over its 91-year history, how did it change from a progressive reform effort to an institution that focused on isolating its inmates from society? How did a lack of resources lead to its closure in 2001?
