Batik is an Indonesian traditional fabric dyeing art. The craft of batik is tied with the Indonesian cultural identity and often expresses symbolic meaning through its color and design. Batik’s name comes from the Javanese words amba which means ‘to write’ and nitik or titik which means ‘dots’ - making the literal meaning into writing with dots. This describes the process of batik making, where craftspeople would draw lines and dots with dye-resistant waxes before the fabric dyeing process, leaving behind intricate patterns on the fabric. In particular, batik tulis, which is done in the traditional process of making batik by hand using wax and a special tool called canting - is highly priced and coveted not only as a garment but also as an artform. This workshop is done to teach anyone who wishes to learn the basics of this art and explore the process of creating your own batik.
