All Fairfax Reads: If Beale Street Could Talk Viewing and Discussion

Celebrate All Fairfax Reads!

Celebrate Fairfax County Public Library's new series: All Fairfax Reads. Fairfax County Public Library is hosting events and a county-wide read of author and civil rights activist James Baldwin's classic 1953 novel, Go Tell It on the Mountain, in celebration of the 100th anniversary of James Baldwin's birth.

Watch If Beale Street Could Talk

Join us for a screening of Barry Jenkins' Academy Award® nominated film, If Beale Street Could Talk. Released in 2019, the film is an adaptation of James Baldwin's novel of the same name. A panel discussion of the film will follow the screening. Cosponsored by George Mason University Library.

Meet the Panelists

Ericka Timmons

Erika strives to write through the lens of a black woman living in a world that lacks understanding or empathy for her. She is a graduate of Northern Virginia Community College, Sum Cum Lade with a AAS in Cinema and is continuing her education at George Mason University majoring in film studies with an emphasis on Producing and minoring in English.

Helon Habila

Helon Habila is a professor of creative writing at George Mason University in Fairfax, VA. He is the author of four novels including Oil on Water (2010) and Travelers (2019). His other books include a work of nonfiction, The Chibok Girls (2016), about the Islamist kidnappings of schoolgirls in Nigeria. He is the editor of the Granta Book of African Short Story (2011).

Shane Stevenson

Shane Stevenson is an undergraduate student studying Civil Engineering with a deep interest in city planning and ecology. Recently, Shane has enjoyed examining stories and dissecting them to understand their relevance to current social dynamics in America, and worldwide. Without a doubt, his highest achievement in college so far is being selected by his former Professor Mehta to speak on a panel to celebrate the impact of James Baldwin in the month of his 100th birthday.
