Honoring Freedom Seekers from Fairfax County and their Acts of Resistance

Honoring Freedom Seekers from Fairfax County and their Acts of Resistance

Across the Northern Virginia landscape, enslaved people resisted systems of oppression not only through flight from enslavers, but also through legal battles in court, and by submitting legislative petitions. In doing so they created a legacy of political action. Join us as Dr. Sheri Huerta explores some of their stories and the impact of their resistance and resilience on local and national anti-slavery activism.

Dr. Sheri Ann Huerta is an award-winning educator at George Mason University. Her research, supported by National Endowment for the Humanities grants, focuses on uncovering the lives of enslaved and free people of color in Virginia and telling their stories.
