Truman and the Atomic Bomb

Join Dr. Richard C. Thornton for a presentation about President Harry S. Truman's authorization of the use of nuclear weapons in war against Japan, and how this decision continues to impact global politics today.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

Richard C. Thornton is President of the Institute for the Study of Strategy and Politics and Em Professor of history and international affairs at The George Washington University, in Washington, D.C., where he taught since 1967, retiring in 2022.

He received his B.A. in 1961 from Colgate University, where he was awarded Phi Beta Kappa membership; and received his Ph.D. from The University of Washington in 1966. He is also a retired Lieutenant Colonel, USAF Reserve, serving in Air Force intelligence for fourteen years, and a former State Department consultant.

Dr. Thornton is the author of fourteen books, including the Nixon-Kissinger Years, The Carter Years, two volumes on Reagan, Ronald Reagan: Revolution Ascendant and Revolution Betrayed, as well as histories of modern China, the rise of Mao, the Korean War, the Falklands War, and Kings and Conquistadors: The Birth of Spain’s American Empire. His forthcoming book is Founding the Empire: The foreign policy of Elizabeth I, 1558-1560.
