Sheep to Shawl: Spinning

Sheep to Shawl: Spinning

Ever wonder where your clothes come from? Find out through Pohick's Sheep to Shawl series, where we will trace the process from start to finish - and invite you to learn how to acquire these ancient skills for yourself.

Give spinning a whirl and see if you like it before investing in costly tools! Sam Goldberg, Melissa Patterson, and Amy Milyko will teach us how to spin wool in two different ways: the first is the portable, low-cost craft of drop-spindling; the second is with the classic spinning wheel.

Undyed wool roving will be provided for attendees to spin. After demonstrations of both techniques, we'll have two spinning wheels available so you can try your hand at turning fleece into yarn. You can also use our many drop spindles while at Pohick. Spinning wool does take time, so feel free to drop into Pohick's Makerspace to use our spinning wheel and drop spindles over the next several months. And if you bring your yarn or roving to our next program, and you'll be able to dye your creation with a professional dyer.

Next up in this series:

  • Dyeing - Lindsay from Polymorph Dye Works will introduce us to the wonders of dyeing. Participants will have a chance to dye wool using professional acid dyes (April 5).

For more information about other programs in this series, visit our Sheep to Shawl program series webpage.
