Women and American History: Mary Lincoln
Mary Lincoln was born in Kentucky and was known for being a spirited, tomboyish young woman who married a struggling lawyer from Illinois. As the spouse of a circuit lawyer, Mary actively supported and promoted Lincoln's career. However, once Lincoln became President, she encountered criticism, skepticism, and personal tragedy. The loss of her son Willie and her husband Abraham deeply affected Mary, leading to challenges that would haunt her for the remainder of her life.
