Design @ Dolley PRESENTS: Bob Friedenberg
Design @ Dolley is launching a new partner program, PRESENTS, which highlights a local artist who will share insights into their craft, followed by a hands-on workshop.
Bob Friedenberg started drawing in college while pursuing his doctorate in theoretical nuclear physics. It’s been a lifelong hobby and now a concentrated passion for him to record and manipulate his mind’s wanderings.
Bob’s work is a collection of very detailed black & white pen & ink drawings all made using a .25mm Rapidograph. He utilizes a wide variety of themes ranging from naturalistic scenery to devices and mechanical objects to science fiction and fantasy. Often, he incorporates pictures, words, symbols, equations, and anything else he can think of into his drawings to add depth, texture, and to engage the viewer on a long-term basis. In fact, recently he often replicates the equations from his PhD dissertation as graphics.
The smaller pictures embedded in his drawings are an essential component of Bob’s work. Aside from the unique texture they provide, they are unplanned and result from a stream of consciousness: he doesn’t know what he’s drawing until he starts drawing it. Visitors are often amazed watching the process at shows. The deliberateness and intentionality due to his rules contrasted with the randomness and chaos from his doodles creates a dynamic tension people find interesting and engaging.
The idea is to keep you looking and always finding something new.
Bob is a frequent vendor at many of the local juried art shows including the Tephra ICA Fine Arts Festival, Bethesda Row Arts Festival (Best in Category 2014), VisArts in Rockville (Best in Category 2016), Manayunk Arts Festival (Best in Category 2016, honorable mention 2024), McLean Holiday Craft Show, Frederick Festival of the Arts, Mt. Gretna Outdoor Art Show (Judges Choice Award 2014), the City of Fairfax Holiday Show, the Tremont Arts & Cultural Festival (Cleveland) (Best in Show 2023, honorable mention 2024 & 2025), and many others.
