Rhythm and Balance: Thillana, Peacock & Pot Dance Showcase
Thillanas were composed in the late 17th and 18th centuries by the Tanjore Quartet, Ootthukkadu Venkata Kavi, and Maharaja Swathi Thirunal. Thillana is typically performed at the end of a Bharatanatyam performance. Characterized by rapid footwork, intricate rhythms, and a repetitive melody, the Thillana is typically set to a Carnatic music composition that includes elaborate percussion accompaniment.
The Peacock Dance celebrates the arrival of spring, utilizing vibrant feathers and often accompanied by renditions from renowned Indian artists, set to the enchanting melodies or ragams of spring, particularly Hamsanandi.
The Pot Dance symbolizes the harmonious balance of various elements. In this performance, the dancer balances a lit candle (often a LED lamp for safety) atop her head while carrying a pot of water, striking various poses on a mud pot.
Presented by the Sindhura School of Bharatanatyam.
