Friends of the Virginia Room Annual Meeting
Come enjoy a Sunday afternoon with the Friends of the Virginia Room! Following a brief Business Meeting, there will be a featured program speaker and refreshments.
Local author Becky Royer will talk about her debut historical fiction novel Chasing Freedom: A Historical Fiction Novel Set in Matildaville, Virginia, Along Washington's Potomac Canal (1801-1807), a story shaped by archival research conducted in FCPL’s Virginia Room.
Royer will share how materials on early Methodism, abolitionist networks, political tensions, and daily life in early 1800s Virginia informed the novel’s setting and themes. The program will also explore her process of transforming historical records into a narrative and the connections she discovered between that era and today’s world.
