Upstart Crow Podcast Author Interview with Lois Romano
A former reporter for the Washington Post, Lois Romano became interested in the plight and role of first ladies while covering Hillary Clinton. After careful research, she writes a book showing Mary Todd Lincoln as a woman who would have done better in a later time. Mary Lincoln fought hard for the causes she believed in until the deaths of her sons, the assassination of her husband, and public misunderstanding worked against her. In a post-feminist era, many politically active people would see her as a hero. This discussion with host William Miller sheds light on Mary Todd Lincoln’s life and ongoing challenges for women in first lady roles and politics. It also covers how the book took on a life of its own after publication and shaped public reaction.
