Shubha Sunder came to the US as a student and stayed for a fifth year of practical learning by living in America. She got a job as a teacher in a private school, rented an apartment, and dealt with a landlord, supervising teachers, a headmistress, snarky or insecure students and their parents—all while living away from home outside the comfort of college. This is not the stereotypical immigrant journey but a real experience she lived and wrote about in a novel. The discussion with host William Miller sheds light on a fundamentally American transition, offers insights into immigrant life, and reminds us how foreign-born people contribute to American life.
