Richard Byrd Lecture: Author Patricia O’Connell Pearson

Patricia O’Connell Pearson will speak about her book Fly Girls: The Daring American Women Pilots Who Helped Win WWII. In 1942, the US Army Airforce needed skilled pilots but trained only men—even if women were doing the training. Finally, female pilots were accepted and the WASP started ferrying planes from factories to bases, towing targets for live ammunition artillery training, and more. Facing prejudice and discrimination, they remained civilians with no military benefits, not even for the burials of the thirty-eight who died. Their story is one of patriotism, selflessness, positive attitudes, and a love of flying. Books available for sale and signing. Adults.
