Bharatanatyam & Folk Dance Performance

Bharatanatyam & Folk Dance Performance

DANCE: STORYTELLING THROUGH MOVEMENT

Bharatanatyama major form of Indian classical dance – reflecting 2000+ years of tradition- tells a story. In Indian mythology, there are three main gods: Brahma (the creator), Vishnu (the protector) and Shiva (the destroyer). It is said that Shiva, who is also known as the lord of dance, created Bharatanatyam. The first syllable ‘Bha’ stands for Bhava [mood], the second syllable ‘ra’ stands for Rasa [sentiment], and the third syllable ‘ta’ stands for Tala [rhythm], the three important aspects of the form.

Sindhura school of Dance, led by Priya Krishnan will showcase the elegance and beauty of this classical Indian dance form through innovative set pieces. Combining rhythm, hand gestures and facial expressions, these dances will convey exotic tales from Indian mythology and folklore. As an artform that draws from many aspects of the extremely diverse Indian culture, the program will also incorporate fusion from the folk dances. This program will provide individuals an opportunity to learn and explore diverse cultures and histories.

This event is cosponsored by the Fairfax Library Foundation.
