Burke Historical Society Presents: Images of America: Lorton Prisons

Burke Historical Society Presents: Images of America: Lorton Prisons

Burke Historical Society Lecture Series.

The workhouse, reformatory, and penitentiary buildings of the Lorton Correctional Complex were built on land purchased by the federal government and leased to the DC Department of Corrections to establish prisons.  Its story reflects the history of the 20th century as it was impacted by and reacted to the ideas, events, and people outside its walls.

Kenena Spalding, a retired Fairfax County teacher, co-authored the Lorton Prisons, published this year by Arcadia Press for their Images of America series. She was a member of the committee that created the Workhouse Museum at the Lorton Workhouse site to preserve and tell its almost 100 years history.

This program is appropriate for ages 13 & Up
