Sheep to Shawl: Felting

Sheep to Shawl: Felting

Ever wonder where your clothes come from? Find out through Pohick's Sheep to Shawl series, where we will trace the process from start to finish - and invite you to learn how to acquire these ancient skills for yourself.

In our next wool adventure, we'll learn the basics of felting by trying out two different techniques: wet felting and needle felting. Both techniques are art forms in themselves, allowing crafters and artists to paint with wool. Needle felting is also useful in repairing small holes in wool sweaters. Join us and discover the joys of felting! Materials will be provided, but participants are encouraged to bring old pantyhose and a spare towel for the wet felting portion of the program.

Next up in this series:

  • Weaving - Learn how to warp a loom, begin to weave by contributing to a community art project, and leave with a cardboard bracelet loom and materials to make a bracelet (June 28).

  • Mending - We'll focus on several techniques to help revive your clothing, including patching, darning, needle felting, and the clever use of embroidery stitches as distinctive design elements. Bring an item in need of mending; we'll figure out the best ways to fix it, identify the tools you'll need, and get you started on your repair! (July 19).

  • Wrapping Up Loose Ends - Program will be in August; more details coming soon!
